Study Butte is named for a butte that rises near the Highway 118 and FM 170 intersection.   Local doctor Will Study developed a mercury mine here in the early 1900s and both the town and the butte feature his last name, pronounced “stoody”.   Study Butte serves as the western entrance of the million-plus acre Big Bend National park.

Within the Christmas Mountains, lies this Sante Fe style home on 80 acres, nestled against the red iron oxide rocks and among nature. The home is made with Rastra block and the studio and detached carport are made with papercrete. The insulation capabilities of these green materials is amazing. The buildings are a sand solar stucco and blend into the mountain scenery.
